Governor introduces marriage equality bill in Maryland

Maryland governor Martin O’Malley introduced a bill on Monday that would legalize same-sex marriages in his state. 

The bill also includes some level of protection for groups who refuse to perform or honor same-sex marriages - namely, religious organizations. It’s a way to gain support by showing that marriage equality is not an encroachment on religious freedom, as some opponents argue, but a legal matter of equality. 

Naturally, religious groups are upset anyway, and the Baltimore Sun article above details how they’ve worked in the past to try to offset a marriage equality bill. Regardless, the governor has put his full support behind efforts to pass the bill.
